MONUMENTA - PARIS 2016

This the largest ephemeral art event in Paris. The artist is charged with the task of filling the massive nave of the Grand Palais. My last visit here was during the Cartier exhibition so did not get to appreciate the full extent of this building.

Artist Hang Yong Ping left China to live in France. He has spearheaded a radical movement as he explores the major issues of our time. 'Empires' forms a landscape made up of eight islands that feature freight containers, a metal snake and a bicorne hat.

The containers evoke globalization as vehicles for the circulation of wealth.

The bicorne evokes the endless power struggles that drive the world and all the industrialists, politicians, military men and tyrants who long to wear this hat (poor Napoleon).

To get a sense of scale see the man on the left...

The snake that slithers over and through the work, mouth wide open and appears to jeopardize the ambition of these powers.

Then there is the beauty of the Grand Palais...

In a word FABULOUS!
